The American social safety net is piecemeal, fragmented, and meager compared to the ones available in other developed economies. It's also labrynithine and confusing to navigate. At the same time, we have one of the largest wealth inequality gaps in the world between those at the very top, and everyone else. These things have been true even before recent events killed the job market, and prices spiked from tariffs and inflation, and all the other fallout that has or will happen from the instabilty of the past decade. But now, these new factors are compounding the ongoing hardship Americans have faced for decades.
Modern Day Survival aims to compile as many free or low cost resources as possible, on a variety of topics, in a well organized and easy to navigate directory. In addition to providing simple guides to access them. This includes government and private sources, covering anything from healthcare, to housing, to sources for free entertainment.
This page is for everyone. Whether or not you're low income, there are many inexpensive or free resources that can be of use to anybody. That said, any sources or information relating to financial needs will most likley only be available in the US, and many are means-tested.
In addition to the directory, I also will host a blog here to share my updates or musings on my own struggles and progress in surviving late capitalist America.
My name is Nicole. I am a low income worker and college student in Cincinnati, Ohio. I rely on government assistance to get by. I rely on public transit to get to and from work, five days a week. I'm thousands in debt, owing on both loans and credit cards. In so many words, I'm one of the millions of Americans struggling just to get by, day after day, and like the rest of them I dream of getting myself to a better place. Despite my precarious situation, I try to make the best of everything and utilize the resources out there to help me get through it all and stay sane, and to make sure I learn from these experiences and do better. As I continue to work my way through this declining system, and to move past my own past mistakes, I want to share anything I find or learn about that I think is worth sharing. Whether that be information on how to access public or private resources, better ways of managing debt, ways to save money on essentials, or things to enjoy that are low cost or free. I believe now is the time for the middle and working classes to come together, share what we know, provide aid to one another in anyway we can. In order to contribute to this vision, while having a fun creative project to work on as a bonus, I created Modern Day Survival, with the hope of helping others as well as sharing my own progress in bettering myself and my situation.
I am brand new to web design and HTML etc. So please forgive me if the website is a little jank and tacky. I'm learning as I go and I'm very open to feedback! I am very grateful for the Neocities platform allowing us to bring back the creativty and freedom of the old internet, and I felt compelled to learn something new and try it myself on something I'm passionate about.
